I decided to write this article to shed some light my sport. It seems that when people ask me why I am always training and traveling to compete they seem to expect me to tell them I am a football or hockey player. When I tell them I train for Firefighter Combat Challenge they look very confused. When I tell them it’s that thing on television with the guys running up the stairs and dragging the dummy they generally do one of two things… Say ahhhhhh yea… That thing…. Or still look at me in a state of confusion.

I have noticed many blog articles on how to spend your time training and eating a certain way in hopes to maximize your workouts. They are all well and good but here is yet another opinion. My favorite day of my training cycle is what is widely known as “The Cheat Day” . This is the day where you can eat as much of anything that you want. The following is one of the many sample diets that myself and fellow team mate Joe Triff put into play on Thursday May 22. One of the hardest things to do as an athlete is to stay motivated on a daily and sometimes hourly basis. It can often be hard to keep your focus due to distractions of work or the sacrifices we all make in our lives to further our training and reach our goals.
There are always those days when you don’t feel like going to the gym, track, pool, arena or whatever facility your sport requires of you that day. There are always going to be the days when you are there and cannot seem to get your head into it, where you cheat your last few reps or you dont push yourself as hard as you know you should. It is at these times when you need to step back and take a serious look at what it is you are doing and why, To find out what what is fueling your competitive engine. Sometimes it is as simple as remembering coming up short at your last contest, Or remembering that feeling after a race when you thought… Did I go as hard as I possibly could have, Did I leave everything I had out there? This is the simplest form of motivation sometimes. Other times you might decide to look at some of the results of your fellow competitors and tell yourself that there is no way that person should have beaten you the way they did. To read published print media articles about your event and tell yourself that it will be your name in the headlines the next time. Perhaps it is finding some influential character in your sport and reading through some of their old quotes or articles they have produced.

After finishing a very successful 2009 year in both National and International competition, Also with the 2010 year well underway things are starting to shape up for our team. Our group has gone through some significant changes and will continue to evolve every day as individuals and as a team through this season with our focus and our energy devoted toward the same goal.
The first event of the year having already taken place in Dubai, Joe Triff placed first in the open mens category edging out the current world champion and other high calibre athletes from many other teams. It looks like the first time we will compete as a full team will be the Canadian Atlantic Regional in July taking place in Halifax. This year the Team feels very proud to be a part of Dr.Burke’s RIVALUS Family and with the continued of support of RIVALUS,Halifax Regional Municipality and Our Coach Alan Wetmore of “The Ultimate Athlete Factory” we feel that this will be our best season yet!
